Sagui

A Link with nature

These cute creatures of the scientific name Calitrix jaccus are also known as “sagui”. They are very common in the area and quite tame due to the amount of contact they’ve had with humans.

They can easily be seen during the day in the trees where they live in groups of between two and 13 individuals.

They have a life expectancy of approximately four years and feed on insects, fruit and the gum from some trees. At night they sleep together in a nest made from vegetation or along a branch.

The males carry the young, handing them over to the females for feeding. Although they live in mixed groups of males and females only the dominant couple in each group can have young.

These monkeys can be seen all along the coast of the Northeast from Bahia to Ceara and also in the region of the Caatinga (shrubland).
